I get letters everyday from young people asking why being “out” is so importANT. The gay community is a very docile group. We don’t get into fist fights per se. We only take to the streets when we have been pushed beyond the limits of what civilized society would deem unacceptable. And we aren’t prone to lynching people, bashing them, and then trying to justify it with a “gay panic” defense. Can you imagine if a heterophobic gay person murdered a straight person and used a “straight panic” defense? You’d still be able to hear the laughter.

When you are “out,” you are visible and have identified yourself as a member of a group and community. The more people that come out the larger that community gets. There is safety in numbers. There is also strength in numbers. Think about this. The more openly gay people in society – the more likely straight people will come in contact with one in their daily routines. That’s where understanding and healing begin. It’s hard to hate someone when that someone is also your brothers, sister, neighbor, friend, mailman, stock broker etc…You are living openly. That in itself is a statement to those around you that you are not lurking in the darkness, hiding something shameful. You are proud of who you. When you are proud and have no secrets…NO ONE can hurt you. You taken away the biggest obstacle seperating them from us…fear. Miracles happen when fear isn’t looking.

I am participating in this event. Give it a look and if you think you have something to add…I hope you will.

    TGIF Everyone!

    I’m leaving momentarily for San Francisco to see ANT’s show! Depending on traffic I’ll either get there 2+ hours early, or I’ll be racing in just as the show starts….think light traffic thoughts for me please :)

    I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend!

    Heidi! Your no traffic thoughts worked! I couldn’t believe it…I went the long way and never went below 60 mph except at the toll plaza (paying for the bridge).

    ANT. I just wanted to tell you that even if I have not been babbling incessantly at all the colonies lately, I still love love love love LOVE you and all you do for us and me. I have been on a facebook tear for awhile sinply cuz it is sooo personal and interactive. It has been so much fun getting to know so many of the colony people more intimately more easily. I SSSSSSSSSSSOOOOOOOOOOOOO thank you for the Colony and all the amazing people who have been drawn to you and then, luckily, to each other. It is truly amazing really, and I don’t know if anyone else really has done that before. In some ways, perhaps, but not such a diverse group. We are not all gay, we are not all bound by a certain agenda, etc.

    Anyway. Thank you. I love you. Emjay MJ

  10. MichelleOpal Says:

    Good Morning Everyone!

    Happy Mother’s Day!

    Ant! Next time you talk to your mom, tell her thanks from all of us, for the gift of you!

    MJ – lovely post. You say it so well. (I tried to get on to the colony on facebook but it said Ant already had too many friends. My thought is, can anyone really have too many friends? Not that I wish for anyone to leave the colony on Facebook, but maybe I’ll get in if’n I keep trying!)

    Sending bright stuff!
    Michelle

  11. Heidi Says:

    ANT – I hope you’re enjoying beautiful Northern California!

    {{{hugs}}}

  13. Heidi Says:

    “so keep thinking the no traffic thoughts for me, please”

    Done!..It worked on Friday so lets hope for a double going and your return back home. :)

  14. Auntie T Says:

    I was spoiled on Friday and paid back today. An hour and 10 minutes to go less than 10 miles (of a 75 mile trip). I turned around and came home. I’ll go over and take my mom to lunch next weekend.

    I really wanted to see the World’s Most Adorable Niece and Nephew today…so now I’ll just have to go down to their house soon and play with them :) I talked to my 4 year old niece and I think I’ll take her to lunch and a movie, or the zoo, or Fairyland, or something soon. She wants to go somewhere, “With just you and me and not my brother.” :) She’s so cute and has the Big Sister Attitude already (Auntie T has taught her well) LOL! :)

    I hope everyone is having a nice Day. I hope everyone’s kids and/or dogs (pets) are spoiling them today. I’m going to spend my Mother’s Day doing chores and laundry and trying to stay away from the stressed out college student who has a week of tests and papers and then another week of finals to study for (he’s a little grumpy at times these days).

    {{{hugs}}}

  15. Shannon Says:

    Happy Monday!

    Well the electricity is back. I was able to get my kids back home about 11:00 last night. Tree came through one of the kid’s room roof so we are trying to get that worked out. But the sun in shining today. Just thankful no one was hurt. Made an eventful birthday that is for sure. Treatment is delayed this week due to the Cancer center still not having electricity. It is scary it was the anniversary of 21 people dying here last May 10th to tornado.

    Love and light to all.

  16. Auntie T Says:

    YIKES Shannon! I didn’t realize the storm was that bad. Thank God nobody was hurt when the tree hit! What a week you’ve had. I hope this week goes much smoother for you.

    I hope everyone has a good week!

    {{{hugs}}}

  17. Craig Says:

    ((Shannon)) So very glad that everyone is okay. What a shock it must have been to have the tree in the house.

  18. Shannon Says:

    It really was a shock. We had no idea it was coming. We had thunderstorms here for over a week. Normally my daughter would have been in her room but she had the flu and I was up with her taking care of her. It has been a year of weather here we had 2 severe ice storms and were without power for 2 weeks then. It took out so many of our trees or this could have been much worse. Just thankful everyone was alright.

    I hope everyone has a wonderful week.

    Hugs to all.
