Female-Fronted Metal Round-Up.

February 3rd, 2012

Oh No They Didn't!

New Epica single released.

"Storm The Sorrow", the new digital single from Dutch female-fronted symphonic metallers EPICA, is being released today via iTunes. The song comes off the band's fifth full-length album, "Requiem For The Indifferent", which will be released on March 9 in Europe and four days later in North America via Nuclear Blast Records. The CD was recorded at Gate Studio in Wolfsburg, Germany under the watchful eye of Sascha Paeth.

Commented the band: "The song 'Storm The Sorrow' is the obvious choice for us to release as a first single. It has all the EPICA ingredients and also a catchy groove but still is a powerful metal-song. Lyrically, 'Storm The Sorrow' deals with criticism and how to handle that on every level.

"Funny fact: when we were working on this song, the working title was 'Signature' because the rhythm which is used in the verse is based on Yves' [Huts, bass] signature!"

A video for "Storm The Sorrow" will be filmed later this month and "will show the band in a way you have never seen before," according to a press release.

New Halestorm interview, discuss the new album.

David "Gus" Griesinger of BackstageAxxess.com conducted an interview with the Atlantic recording group HALESTORM at the 2012 NAMM (National Association Of Music Merchants) show, a massive music-products convention that took place January 19-22 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California. You can now watch the chat here (once again, no embed).

HALESTORM has announced the release of its hugely anticipated new album. "The Strange Case Of…" arrives in stores and at all DSPs on April 10. The CD is heralded by the electrifying new single, "Love Bites (So Do I)", impacting now at rock radio outlets nationwide. The track — as well as three other highlights from "The Strange Case Of…" — is featured on HALESTORM's new EP, "Hello, It's Mz. Hyde", which is available today at all leading digital retailers.

Produced by Howard Benson (who previously collaborated with the Pennsylvania-based hard rock band on their self-titled 2009 debut), "The Strange Case Of…" was recently named among Revolver's "Most Anticipated Albums of the Year." "Led by one of our favorite rocker babes, singer-guitarist Lizzy Hale, (HALESTORM) promise a more personal album for their follow-up," the magazine noted. "But don't expect them to get all sappy on us. There should still be more than enough of the band's now signature raucous attitude and righteous riffs for any headbanger to get off."

Currently poised to embark on a European tour alongside Atlantic's own SHINEDOWN, HALESTORM will hit the road hard to support "The Strange Case Of…", beginning with a major U.S. trek alongside GODSMACK and fellow Atlantic recording group STAIND. The dates get underway April 13 at Augusta, Georgia's John Paul Jones Arena and then continue through mid-May.

Formed by frontwoman Lizzy Hale and her brother, drummer Arejay Hale, HALESTORM has been hailed far and wide as an incendiary new force in modern hard rock. "Halestorm" made a top 5 debut on SoundScan's "Hard Music" chart upon its 2009 release, simultaneously bursting into the top 40 on the comprehensive The Billboard 200. The album subsequently sold more than 300,000 copies, and half a million cumulative tracks. Produced by Howard Benson (DAUGHTRY, MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE, FLYLEAF), the album earned extensive acclaim for its infectious hard rock anthems, sexy hooks, and rough-and-tumble grooves.

"The Strange Case Of…" marks HALESTORM's first release since last year's "ReAniMate: The CoVeRs eP", which saw the band putting their unique stamp on a diverse collection of classic songs, including tracks by GUNS N' ROSES, THE BEATLES, HEART, TEMPLE OF THE DOG, SKID ROW, and LADY GAGA. HALESTORM also unleashed their first-ever live CD/DVD, "Live In Philly 2010", featuring such favorites from the band's self-titled debut as "It's Not You", "Familiar Taste of Poison" and the rock radio smash "I Get Off".

Preview of upcoming Amberian Dawn album now available.

A three-and-a-half-minute YouTube clip featuring audio samples of "Circus Black", the fourth studio album from Finnish female-fronted symphonic metallers AMBERIAN DAWN, is available below.

"Circus Black" will be released in Finland on February 29 via Spinefarm Records. The band's mainman, keyboardist and guitarist Tuomas Seppälä composed all ten songs for the CD and vocalist Heidi Parviainen penned the lyrics.

"Circus Black" features guest appearances by Tuomas Nieminen (ex- ADAMANTRA, THRONE OF CHAOS), Nils Nordling (ex-DREAMTALE, ANIMAL HOUSE), Timo Kotipelto (STRATOVARIUS) and Jens Johansson (STRATOVARIUS, DIO, YNGWIE MALMSTEEN'S RISING FORCE). Nieminen and Nordling share vocal parts in the song "I Share With You This Dream", Kotipelto sings lead on "Cold Kiss" and Johansson plays a keyboard solo on "Crimson Flower".

Commented Tuomas: "'Circus Black' is the most impressive AMBERIAN DAWN album so far. Musically it represents the most sophisticated and most symphonic edge of AMBERIAN DAWN music. There's more diversity on this album than never before. This is the first time we used a real choir and we gathered some really excellent professional opera singers together to be able to achieve the best-sounding choir possible. This choir was conducted by Mikko P. Mustonen from Pathos Music. He also arranged the choir and orchestral parts.

"We managed once again to get some world-class guests on this album. So, the production is our biggest so far and the final polish on this album was given by Teropekka Virtanen (mixing engineer) and Mika Jussila (mastering engineer) at legendary Finnvox Studios in Finland.

"The whole band did excellent job with recordings. It was really awesome, that Kasperi [Heikkinen] recovered from his hand injury just in time (only a couple of weeks before the mixing sessions started) and he was able to play guitar solos on this album. Even in the fall it seemed that I and Kimmo [Korhonen] would have to play all guitar parts by ourselves."

"Circus Black" track listing:

01. Circus Black (3:49)
02. Cold Kiss (feat. Timo Kotipelto) (3:31)
03. Crimson Flower (feat. Jens Johansson) (4:25)
04. Charnel's Ball (4:27)
05. Fight (3:21)
06. Letter (4:31)
07. I Share With You This Dream (3:37)
08. Rivalry Between Good and Evil (instrumental) (4:00)
09. Guardian (5:09)
10. Lily of the Moon (4:12)

I don't *love* the new Epica song but I'm not worried since they have a bizarre tendency to release the worst songs on the album as singles. Lacuna Coil needs to stop fucking around with these awful tours, first Gigantour and then a South American tour with Lamb of God and Hatebreed? I cunt. Lizzy Hale is a babe. That is all. Who the fuck is that guy singing for Amberian Dawn, he needs to GTFO.

Spoiler-Free Review of Being Human Series Four/Episode One.

February 3rd, 2012

Oh No They Didn't!

So intense is the first episode of Being Human’s new series that there’s a lot we’re not allowed to talk about, so excuse us if we creep around the actual plot and some (magnificent) performances with greater delicacy than a vampire in a house of mirrors. Frankly, to tell you anything in the way of plot would be to shatter an hour of teeth-grinding suspense and horror.

Whether you’re an old fan or a curious newcomer, you’ll be thrown into the deep end. For Eve of the War is a bold opener; one which doesn’t invite you gently back into the world of Being Human but drags you by the shoulders, kicking and screaming, and forces you to stare at just how dark things are. Just how dark things will become. It’s uncompromisingly bleak, and utterly brilliant.

If you’re worried about missing Aidan Turner, don’t. You’ll be too busy wringing your hands and gawping. The change in cast leads to a feeling that ‘anything can happen’, which is unusual for an opening episode but works wonderfully with the horror and the vampires’ audacious plans.

So, with the cast changes does Series 4 still feel like Being Human?

Oh yes. More frantic and threatening than you may expect it to be, but it’s definitely the show you love. That’s partly down to the lovely Lenora Crichlow as Annie, whose motherly nature causes her to be the character around whom all others orbit, but also Toby Whithouse’s strong writing, which makes us feel like we’ve known even brand new characters for three series already.

Werewolf Tom (Michael Socha, brother of Misfits star Lauren) is a fantastic full-time addition, and sure to win many fans (and probably a few awards) with both his brutality and his humour: “Even McNair gave me a name, and he ate my parents.”

Prowling around with a wax jacket full of stakes, and desperately trying to fit in, there’s something strangely loveable about him; he’s like a puppy with the ability to kill on command. Dare we say it, you may even end up liking him more than George.

Such is the importance of a certain piece of plotting that newcomer Hal (Damian Molony) doesn’t get a great deal of screen-time here, but for an unknown actor with a big leather jacket to fill Molony has startling gravitas onscreen.

Toby Whithouse believes him to be ‘one of the most exciting and versatile actors of his generation’, and he’s not lying. Hal smoulders like Mitchell, but he’s a much more self-assured bloodsucker. It’s going to be a real treat to see his arc across the series.

Talking of arcs, if you weren’t keen on the ‘wolf-shaped bullet’ prophecy of Series 3 then you may not like the even larger prophecy looming over Series 4, concerning George and Nina’s baby. It does, however, have a rather interesting wrinkle to it. It’s not something we can talk about here, but it’ll no doubt have the forums ablaze with speculation after the episode is over.

It’s clear that this is going to be Being Human’s most ambitious series yet. Right from the first second the stakes are high: stories are still being told, fates are still winding together, plots are still being twisted.

The future in the Being Human world looks grim, but for the show itself, things have never looked better.

In case you needed another reason to NOT watch What to Expect When You’re Expecting

February 3rd, 2012

Oh No They Didn't!

In which the hilarity of gang rape is brought to you by Hollywood

When I traveled to the set of What To Expect When You’re Expecting last fall and chatted with Elizabeth Banks about her character Wendy, I was permitted to observe an important scene. As I wrote earlier, breastfeeding advocate Wendy takes to the stage of a baby expo in Atlanta only to have forgotten to print out her speech. With a swelling belly and “baby brain,” Wendy looks out on the audience of mommies and decides to share with them just how awful her pregnancy has been. In addition to sharing details about her hemorrhoids and cankles, the expectant mother also tells the crowd that she also feels like she has been gang raped — and it’s supposed to be funny.

As Elizabeth sauntered back forth over the stage with in her fake pregnancy suit, the actress listed all of her ailments, telling them also of:

“…a pressure in my uterus that feels like I’ve been gang raped! That’s right, gang raped!”

Now I get the sentiment of the dialogue as I’ve known enough pregnant women in my life to empathize with said uterine pressures. But I doubt the writers of What To Expect When You’re Expecting can empathize with many victims of gang rape, as evidenced by that line. Nor do I think Elizabeth’s privileged white lady of a character has any idea of what it feels like to actually be gang raped making the comparison pretty inappropriate.

While I recognize that this scene is hoping to be “off-color” with Eizabeth’s other dialogue about her nipples being so large you can see them from Google Earth and ripping her pregnancy bra from her chest in relief, gang rape is more than simply off-color — it’s a brutality that fails to even be recognized as a crime in many cases. The fact that gang rape was tossed in so casually during Elizabeth’s monologue makes the reference even more alarming in that we’re supposed to laugh at the violation of women and girls without even thinking about it. Much like the fraternity boys at the University of Vermont who surveyed fellow brothers about their musical tastes and sexual preferences, and then nonchalantly asked who they would like to rape, this scene employs the same device by demonstrating a casualness about rape.

From what I’ve seen and read, What To Expect When You’re Expecting is hoping to appeal to mothers and their plights. While watching the scene on a monitor, I and other mommy bloggers were told by the director, Kirk Jones, that he wanted to show “a mother being honest about [pregnancy].” Those photo-shopped, mannequin-like promotional posters may illustrate otherwise, but the creators of this film are hoping mothers everywhere will flock to theaters to empathize with these characters and their story lines. That’s why I find it so perplexing that writers and producers of this film decided to trivialize something as pervasive as rape in a film specifically for women and mothers. Women aren’t the only victims of rape, but they’re certainly the biggest target, with one in six being sexually assaulted in their lifetime. One in four girls and one in six boys will be sexually abused before they turn 18.

Slut-shaming and victim-blaming may be the two pillars upholding rape culture, but the third is downplaying the impact of rape and its relevance, especially to mothers and kids. And while I don’t think all of us should sit around being tight-lipped about rape, I also know that scenes in films and TV shows, much like what I witnessed on that set in Atlanta, have the power to make rape seem inconsequential and far from transgressive.

That may have only been one scene of What To Expect When You’re Expecting, but the glaring laugh factor in rape is but a small window into the minds that allegedly crafted a film for women. The tasteless gang rape joke may not sully the whole comedic movie, but the reference will certainly taint it should the moment not end up on the cutting room floor.

Aguilera Family Trauma: Singer Considers Reconciling With Long-Estranged Father

February 3rd, 2012

Oh No They Didn't!

They say time heals all wounds — and in the case of Christina Aguilera's fractured relationship with her father, Fausto Aguilera, that could very well be true. In the March issue of Latina Magazine, cover girl Xtina reveals that after years of estrangement, she's considering a reconciliation with the man who left her traumatized and abused as a child.

"I've talked about how rough things were for me and I'm sure he's heard it," 'The Voice' judge tells the magazine. "He can't be thrilled about it. So maybe one day we can do lunch … I'm 31 years old now. Maybe it's time."

For fans of Christina, this change of heart will likely come as a huge surprise. After all, in a 2010 interview with the same magazine, Aguilera slammed Fausto and defended her lack of contact with him. "[Our relationship is] pretty nonexistent. I'm in a place in my life where I just don't see a reason for it," said Christina at the time.

"There's always room for forgiveness," added the songstress. "And I do forgive — but you grow up and make choices for your family."

The road to forgiveness has been a long and bumpy one for Aguilera. After she and her mother escaped the cycle of domestic violence at the hand of Fausto, Christina had very limited contact with her father growing up — until she found fame, that is. "We spoke for the first time in a long while," the singer told Rolling Stone in an interview in 1999. "Really, he's a stranger to me. He's apologized. I think he had a lot of guilt."

With Christina's new revelation, it seems the newly-divorced singe mother is trying to find the strength to finally move on from the ghosts of her childhood drama. Whatever happens between the singer and Fausto, we're happy to see Aguilera attempting to find a new emotional balance.

New Kris Allen Leaks

February 3rd, 2012

Oh No They Didn't!

Sky? Still blue. Grass? Still green. RCA? Still leaking music.

First-up: “Forget About You” – your typical WGWG fodder layed over a lukewarm electronic beat (HAC fans looking for a cat nap an easy listen will probably be the only ones who enjoy this)

Secondly: “Parachute” – a rough cut of a song that strays from Allen’s typical repertoire and into Maroon 5-lite territory (he’s no Levine and vocally strains on the song, but one can hope he’ll continue to experiment with material that’s not strictly HAC)

The age of these tracks as well as their writer and producer information are currently unknown. These new leaks are arriving hot on the heels of the recent leak of Allen’s rumored forthcoming single “(Stand For The) Vision Of Love” that pitched his fans into a collectively confused tizzy a little over a week ago. The Maison & Dragen dance remix of the song penned by Allen, Nasri, and Adam Messinger has since generated some mild buzz for the singer among American Idol and electronic music blogs alike. Whether or not the hype heats up for Allen beyond the blogs remains to be seen.

Sources: My own lack of wit | “Forget About You” and “Parachute” Leak | Recent Idol blog about “(Stand For The) Vision of Love”

Personally, I don’t care for either of them and if they’re on the new album (no, please) I’m hoping that “Forget About You” turns out less bland and “Parachute” gets a different vocal cut. In the meantime, I’ll continue to listen to “Fighters” (a prior leak that’s “Live Like We’re Dying” 2.0) and that snazzy “Vision of Love” dance remix, which prompts me to make an ass of myself in my office cube through the art of chair dancing.
